The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster final round of play.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie from around eight foot to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
The champion started the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.
Play-Off Climax
This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more individual. To play with him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
