Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the property close to the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who ran away following the explosion was apprehended not long after. All three have been admitted to hospital.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location showed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member caused the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander informed news outlets.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our members,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the detonation had happened on a story above the entrance and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to local news, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
