A Devastating Shift Only 12 Months Has Brought in the US

In late October 2024, the landscape was entirely different. Prior to the US presidential election, considerate Americans could recognize the nation's serious imperfections – its inequities and imbalance – however they could still see it as America. A democracy. A land where constitutional order meant something. A country headed by a honorable and decent official, despite his advanced age and declining health.

These days, this autumn, countless Americans scarcely know the nation we inhabit. Persons believed to be undocumented migrants are detained and pushed into vehicles, at times denied due process. The eastern section of the White House – is being destroyed to build a lavish dance hall. The president is harassing his political rivals or perceived antagonists and requesting legal authorities transfer a massive sum of public funds. Armed military personnel are being sent to US urban areas under fabricated reasons. The Pentagon, relabeled the Defense Ministry, has effectively liberated itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny as it spends possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Colleges, attorney offices, news companies are yielding under the president’s threats, and rich magnates are treated like members of the royal family.

“The United States, just months before its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has tipped over the brink toward dictatorship and fascism,” Garrett Graff, stated this past summer. “In the end, more quickly than I thought feasible, it occurred here.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. It is difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – how severely declined we have become, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

However, we understand that the leader was legitimately chosen. Following his profoundly alarming first term and despite the cautions linked to the understanding of the rightwing blueprint – even after the leader directly said publicly he intended to rule as a tyrant just on day one – sufficient voters selected him rather than his Democratic opponent.

While alarming as the current reality are, it’s even scarier to recognize that we’re only three-quarters of a year into this administration. Where will an additional three years of this downfall leave us? And if that period becomes an prolonged era, because there is nobody to stop this ruler from deciding that additional tenure is necessary, possibly for national security reasons?

Certainly, there is still hope. There will be congressional elections in 2026 that could bring a different political equilibrium, should Democrats regain either chamber of parliament. There exist government representatives who are trying to impose certain responsibility, for example lawmakers that are starting a probe into the attempted money grab by federal prosecutors.

And a presidential election in 2028 could initiate us down the road to recovery exactly as last year’s election set us on this disappointing trajectory.

We see millions of Americans protesting in public spaces of their cities, like they performed recently in the No Kings rallies.

An ex-cabinet member, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of America is rising”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or throughout the Vietnam war protests or during the Nixon controversy.

During those times, the listing ship finally returned to balance.

Reich says he recognizes the signals of that revival and sees it happening now. As support, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the widespread, bipartisan pushback to a television host's removal and the largely united rejection by reporters to accept military mandates they solely cover authorized information.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists inactive till some venality becomes so noxious, a particular deed so disrespectful toward public welfare, specific cruelty so loud, that it is compelled other than to stir.”

It's a positive outlook, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Maybe he’ll prove to be right.

At the same time, the major inquiries persist: can America regain its footing? Can it reclaim its position in the world and its adherence to the rule of law?

Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My negative thoughts indicates that the final scenario is true; that everything might be finished. My hopeful heart, nevertheless, convinces me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways available.

For me, as a media critic, that’s about pushing media professionals to adhere, more completely, to their purpose of holding power to account. For some people, it may be participating in election efforts, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to protect voting rights.

Less than a year ago, we lived in an alternate reality. In the future? Or after another term? The fact is, we are uncertain. All we can do is try to persevere.
